Singles Report: Selena Gomez sneaks past Liam Payne at radio
In stark contrast to the previous month, radio was a refreshingly congested space last week, with new singles from Liam Payne, Camila Cabello and Selena Gomez all vying for Most Added.
While all the odds were stacked behind Liam Payne’s debut single Strip That Down to take the crown, a mere five extra additions saw Selena Gomez’ new hit Bad Liar squeeze ahead to take pole position.
Bad Liar was added to every major player in commercial radio, butStrip That Downwas there too – bucking a long-lasting trend of landslide victories at radio.
History tells us that a new release from Sia can never be overlooked at Australian commercial radio. She leads the charge this week among a host of other standout releases.
Her track Reaper, co-written withKanye West, was originally intended for Rihanna’s Anti. Either way, it won’t make a difference to commercial, who will jump on the uplifting track without hesitation.
TMN Charts Editor Daniel Respall agrees: “At this point it is inconceivable to think of a Sia single not doing extremely well on Australian commercial radio.”
The track, released last year as a part of Sia’s album This Is Acting, has already amassed 43 million streams on Spotify alone.
Elsewhere, Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s Despacito (Remix) ft. Justin Bieber is effortlessly ascending the Hot 100 chart. At #3 from #7 on its third week in the chart, it’s been smooth sailing for the Latin crossover hit so far, breezing past the likes of Harry Styles,ZeddandLorde, a task not easily accomplished.
Unfortunately for Fonsi, the fun may stop there, at least for now. IfDJ Khaled’s star-studded I’m The One isn’t enough to obstruct Despacito’s run, The Chainsmokers & Coldplay certainly will.
It’s now five consecutive weeks at the top for Something Just Like This. Radio is still as much in love with the track as it wasupon itsofficial service in March and isseeminglytaking over from where Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You left off.
