Niall takes it slow, Katy takes radio, but sneaky Bieber’s secretly everywhere: Singles Report
It’s a relatively quiet week on the new singles front in this week’s Australian Singles Report, but a new solo effort from a One Direction member is not something that you can just ignore. Slow Hands by Niall Horan is a good deal less restrained than debut single This Town, and at this point is almost guaranteed to take next week’s Most Added.
(Speaking of 1D, Harry Styles also has a newbie out from his self-titled album that’s dropping this Friday – but the Beatles-apingSweet Creature is an instant grat, not a single, so won’t make a dent in radio yet. No doubt that won’t matter at all to the Styles stans streaming it on repeat, either in celebration or mourning, depending on how they went in the great ticket rush of Friday afternoon.)
After the huge success of Katy Perry’s comeback single Chained To The Rhythm in February, her next effort Bon Appetit ft. Migos was swept up by all key commercial players last week including the Nova Network, KIIS and both regional and commercial Hit stations. However, it failed to match Chained To The Rhythm’s record-breaking #8 Hot 100 debut, entering at #27.
DJ Khaled’sI’m The Oneft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper and Lil Wayne isn’t too far from the top though. The second single to feature his 6-month-old son on the album artwork, it’s come across well to commercial, no doubt thanks to a feature list that reads like the top of a festival poster.
While the stalemate at #1 and #2 continues on the Hot 100, Zedd earns himself a new career peak with Stay, his recent collaboration with Alessia Cara. The move to #3 from #4 sees it officially overtake previous best Stay The Night ft. Paramore’s Hayley Williams, which peaked at #3 in late 2013.
The biggest mover on the chart this week is Martin Jensen’s Solo Dance. Several months after its initial service, the track has seen a huge audience resurgence, with the track now at #48 from #87, making it the #1 Heatseeker.
Meanwhile, atop the breakers chart is the new remix of Luis FonsiandDaddy Yankee’s Despacito featuring Justin Bieber. The remix is likely to be just a few playlist rotations away from cracking the Hot 100 and cementing the remix as a Latin-commercial crossover success – exactly what the inclusion of Bieber was intended to achieve.
While the original version of Despacito has been lingering in the top end of the international YouTube chart for a number of weeks, the remix has exploded to the top of Spotify and Shazam’s international charts and is showing plenty of potential to take on heavy hittersEd Sheeran, The Chainsmokers and Kendrick Lamaracross the charts in the coming weeks.
The takeaway? Between his features on Despacito and I’m The One,Biebz is going to be all over radio again this week – even without a single of his own.
