Sia, triple j, Tkay Maidza win Rolling Stone Awards
One of Australia’s most anticipated industry events, the Rolling Stone Awards, honoured its backbone in style in Sydney last night with triple j taking home the Milestone Award and The Go-Betweens’ Lindy Morrison bestowed with the coveted Rolling Stone Award.
triple j celebrated its 40th year as a national youth broadcaster this year with a special broadcast series, a TV documentary and the seven-hour Beat The Drum festival (where Daniel Johns covered Nirvana). Zan Rowe, who joined the station 10 years ago, and host Alex Dyson accepted the award.
Social and music industry advocate Lindy Morrison, who joined The Go-Betweens as drummer in 1980 and has been theNational Welfare Coordinator ofindustry charity Support Actsince 2000, added to her list of accolades last night. Morrison was awarded the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music at the APRAs last year, and last night was presented with the Rolling Stone Award, which recognises an outstanding career-long contribution to popular culture. Past winners of the award include Michael Gudinski of The Mushroom Group, Cold Chisel and Paul Kelly.
The sixth annual event held at Byron Kennedy Hall in Moore Park also saw Sia add to her growing list of awards this year; the Adelaide-born artists took out Album of the Year for her Grammy nominated release 1000 Forms Of Fear. Fellow Adelaide artist Tkay Maidzawon the Best New Talent award, AIR Award winner Remi took home the award for Best Independent Release for his Raw X Infinity LP, The Delta Riggs took home Live Act of the Year, ARIA winners Peking Duk and Nicole Millar won the Music Video of the Year award for 2x Platinum single High and The Griswolds took out Single of the Year for Beware The Dog.
The Awards were hosted by Max TV’s Chit Chat Von Loopin Staband featured performances by Melbourne’s Ecca Vandal and Sydney’s Steve Smyth.
