Sia & Scott Walker to score Natalie Portman’s music film ‘Vox Lux’
Australian-born Sia and ‘60s pop icon turned avant-garde musician Scott Walker are scoring Vox Lux, the upcoming film starring Natalie Portman and Jude Law.
Vox Lux was written and directed by former actor Brady Corbet, and takes in 18 years in the line of Celeste – a singer who overcomes a national tragedy during her childhood to find massive fame.
“It’s a historical melodrama set in America between 1999 and 2017,” Corbet revealed.
“Its protagonist is a pop star called Celeste and it chronicles, via her gaze, key events and cultural patterns that have so far defined the early 21st century.”
Law plays her manager, while English actress Raffey Cassidy pulls two roles, one as Portman’s songwriting sister and later as her daughter.
Vox Lux reunites Portman and Law, who played a couple on the 2004 film adaptation of the Patrick Marber play Closer.
Initially, Sia was to write all the songs on the soundtrack, marking her major film composing debut.
But Walker was brought it a later stage to contribute.
Before his arrival, Oscar-nominated Mica Levi (Under The Skin, Jackie) was speculated to join Sia.
This is the second collaboration for Corbet and Walker. Their first was Corbet’s debut film, The Childhood Of A Leader.
Walker also scored the 1999 Leos Carax film, Pola X.
Scott Walker emerged in the ‘60s as a global pop star with The Walker Brothers, a trio of unrelated US singers (he was born Scott Engel) who had chart-toppers as The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Any More and Make It Easy on Yourself.
Blessed with a baritone voice and incredible good looks, he stayed on in Britain and went on to a solo career as a baroque pop singer and songwriter.
Among those who cited him as an influence have been David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Goldfrapp, Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy, Billy MacKenzie of The Associates, David Sylvian, Julian Cope, Jarvis Cocker, Antony Hegarty, Thom Yorke / Radiohead, Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree and Tim Bowness of No-Man.
He’s now hailed as a 21st-century avant-garde identity and has worked with Pulp, Ute Lemper and Bat For Lashes.
Walker recently published a songbook Sundog of his lyrics from the past 60 years while his last album Soused (2014) was a triumphant genre-bending record with experimental metal group Sunn O)))).
Vox Lux has its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 4 and then to the Toronto International Film Festival later in the month.
Meanwhile, Sia continues her work with supergroup LSD, with dance producer Diplo and rapper Labrinth.
So far the singles Genius, Audio and the current Thunderclouds have been awesome.
An album is in the pipeline but no release date is confirmed.
