Short Stack sign with UNFD, release new track ‘Burn You Down’
Short Stack are back.
The pop-punk trio return with new single ‘Burn You Down,’ the first released through a new deal with UNFD.
Shaun Diviney and Co. snag a new label home with the independent music group as they embrace the meatier rock edge that was in their core right from the beginning, though not always obvious.
For a time, Short Stack were Australia’s hottest rock property, a group that drew shrieking hordes of teenage girls wherever they plugged in their guitars.
Diviney (guitar and vocals), Andy Clemmensen (bass and vocals) and Bradie Webb (drums) had the type of following of a 5 Seconds of Summer, or Justin Bieber, though they stepped away from the spotlight just prior to the streaming revolution.
“I’ve always admired Short Stack for their ability to build such a loyal and enthusiastic fanbase, and for how unapologetic they were in doing so,” comments UNFD General Manager Luke Logemann on the new signing. “That’s always been the ethos of UNFD as a label and our bands, to care about the music and the fans first and approval last.”
The one-time heart throbs from Budgewoi on the NSW Central Coast galvanized an enormous fanbase through YouTube and MySpace, then the social-media platform of choice.
They turned the hype into record sales from the start, as their debut Stack Is The New Black went to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart without conventional marketing.
On their second album, This Is Bat Country from 2010, the group took a different musical direction. The set peak at No. 6, but failed to match the excitement of its predecessor.
The group disbanded in 2012, reunited two years later for live dates and the 2015 album Homecoming, and pulled the plug once more.
Their latest comeback was hinted at in early 2020, and confirmed with a run of concerts, all of which were postponed due to the pandemic.
To celebrate the new release, Short Stack will perform this Thursday (March 4) at Crowbar, Sydney, with support from Redhook.
Their rescheduled national tour is due to kick off Thursday April 1 at Fiction Club in Canberra.
The Short Stack of 2021 is a wiser, more mature unit. “Everything about how we approached this was different,” comments Diviney, “where we used to find a lot of pressure to deliver something specific, we approached this with the thought that this is our chance to be the band we’ve always wanted to be.”
