Rolling Stones announce Australian stop for retrospective exhibition
The Rolling Stones’ multimedia, 50-year retrospective exhibition, Exhibitionism, will stop in Sydney.
At its only Australian stop, Exhibitionism will be held at the almost finished International Convention Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour in November 2018.
The news was announced onThe Today Showthis morning.
The exhibition heads to Australia as part of a partnership between Destination NSW, TEG Live and iEC Exhibitions.
Exhibitionism will feature nine themed galleries at ICC’s 35,000sq m exhibition space. Each will showcase the band’s archives of film, art, photography, recordings, stage designs, lyric books, diaries, behind-the-scenes footage and fashion, including over 70 stage costumes designed by L’Wren Scott, Prada, Ossie Clark, Dior, Alexander McQueen andHedi Slimane.
Perhaps most interestingly, the exhibition will showcase a recreation of ‘Edith Grove’, the Stones’ first shared flat in Chelsea, and a reconstructionof their recording studio, complete with original instruments and interactive mixing desks.
The experience finishes with a backstage and 3D concert experience.
Mick Jagger has said it won’t bear any similarities to a museum showing:
“We’ve been thinking about this for quite a long time but we wanted it to be just right and on a large scale. It’s not going to be like walking into a museum,” he said. “It’s going to be an event, an experience. It’s about a sense of the Rolling Stones – it’s something we want people to go away talking about.”
Exhibitionism opened in London in April where it was showcased across two floors at Saatchi Gallery until September 4. It is due to open in New York City this November in Manhattan at the Industria Superstudio in the West Village.
The exhibition is expected to deliver an estimated $35 million to the Sydney economy and attract thousands to Darling Harbour.
