RESONATE begins Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander songwriting camp

RESONATE, a special three-day in-person songwriting camp, started yesterday in Sydney at Studios 301.

The work of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music Office (NATSIMO), RESONATE brings together the finest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander songwriters, producers, and artists from around Australia to collaborate on writing and recording new music. Now in its second year, Expressions of Interest came in far higher numbers from songwriter members across the country.

This year’s camp is curated by renowned producer and composer François Tétaz, who won the Grammy for Record of the Year in 2013 for his work on Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’. The sessions are facilitated by producer, engineer, and mixer Antonia Gauci.

Working hard in the studio this year are the following: composer and songwriter Brendon Boney (The Magpie Swoop, Microwave Jenny); Candice Lorrae of pop duo The Merindas; rising stars Jem Cassar-Daley and Cloe Terare; beat creator Jarred Wall, also known as Boox Kid; producer, writer and composer Blake Rhodes (Mr Rhodes); singer songwriter and stage and screen performer Bojesse Pigram; and singer, songwriter and actor Marcus Corowa, who has performed in stage productions of Bran Nue Dae and The Secret River.

“I’m so grateful to have these eight uniquely talented individuals here for RESONATE,” NATSIMO director Leah Flanagan shared. “The NATSIMO’s aim for the program is to foster an inspiring and inclusive studio environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander APRA AMCOS members to immersed in the process of co-writing and collaboration.

We want to build community across our membership to create networks and pathways for our writers living outside the east coast bubble while also ensuring that our writers are match fit once they hit the competitive industry-facilitated program.”
