After launching their services in twenty new territories last December, Rdio are now preparing to enter the Indian market, acquiring popular streaming service Dhingana with plans to rebrand and relaunch it.

The Indian streaming music service seemingly shut down a few weeks ago, despite having nine million active users as recently as last October. Rdio purchased the company for an undisclosed amount, although reports suggest the acquisition price was lower than US$7m.

Dhingana’s founders Snehal Shinde and Swapnil Shinde will join Rdio, with Snehal Shinde stating: “We look forward to working toward a unified launch in India through the Rdio brand in the near future”

Rdio head Anthony Bay said of the expansion plans: “We are one of very few global companies that can provide a great music experience to an expanding international audience, and it is our objective to bring that experience to India and to non-resident Indians and fans around the world.”

Rdio currently have a total reach of 51 international markets.
