Pipicelli to leave dmg; New Talent to Watch 2014; Hutchence’s sister “angry and sad for Michael”
The Top New Talent To Watch in 2014
Last year’s list of Top New Talent to Watch had a big impact on the radio industry, many listed have taken big steps forward in their careers.
Former Austereo CEO Brad March has now released this year’s list of the up-and-coming radio talent.
All of the names on the list have the potential to be tomorrow’s biggest radio or media stars. Some are listed on their own, and others as part of an established on-air team. Some were also on last year’s New Talent list, but earned another mention.
Hutchence’s sister “angry and sad for Michael”
Meshel Laurie presented an INXS special on Nova 100 this morning: INXS – Never Tear Us Apart – The Sister, The Manager, The Friend which ran from 7.30-8am on the breakfast show.
She spoke to Michael Hutchence’s sister Tina about what she thought of the TV show, to which she replied: “I’m angry and sad for Michael, because, I mean, it’s a complete fabrication of our family”.
INXS’ manager Chris Murphy broke down and told Meshel he is doing it all for Michael, while Molly Meldrum refuted claims made that he didn’t support INXS.
ABC’s RN cover regional streaming issue
During the week, Radio National’s Bush Telegraph program covered the current regional radio streaming issue.
They spoke with Grant Cameron, Executive Director of Grant Broadcasters, and Dan Rosen, CEO of the PPCA.
Kyle & Jackie O to star in new radio show
Kyle & Jackie O have a new radio show which is distributed via Kyle’s production company King Kyle, and Bowserland Media and Entertainment (run by radio and TV production guru Geoff Bowser).
The A List features content that has aired on their KIIS 1065 breakfast show, as well as content and guests exclusive to the new show.
As the name suggests, the show will mainly be focussed on celebrity content.
The A List will air on KIIS 1065 every Sunday from 4pm to 7pm, and repeated Monday mornings in mid-dawns – but is being distributed beyond KIIS too.
The first station to pick it up is Hot Tomato on the Gold Coast who will air it Friday nights from 7pm – 10pm. We also hear plans are in place for the show to go further into regional Australia with a wider, global rollout within weeks.
Toni Pipicelli to leave dmg
One of the long standing members of the Nova family is set to leave, after 13 years with dmg Radio.
Toni Pipicelli joined as Promotions & Project Manager at Nova 96.9 shortly after their launch, she then moved into an AMD role under MD Dan ’Westo’ Bessant.
Over the years she has also been Assistant Program Director of Nova 100 and Group Music Director.
Parsons’ SCA departure confirmed
Southern Cross Austereo has confirmed the news that has been widely known for a few weeks now: Ben Parsons will leave the company.
Parsons, who is currently the Head of Television and General Manager of the now defunct ’EMU’ division of SCA, will finish with the company at the end of February – after 16 years – to launch a new venture.
Parsons said: “It has been an extraordinary journey and I have been privileged to work with some of the best media executives in the business. SCA is now one of Australia’s most diverse media brands and is well set for future growth.”
PPCA tells CRA to cough up the cash
The PPCA, representing Australian record companies, has applied in the Copyright Tribunal for a timetable to pursue a final scheme for a fee structure regarding the online streaming of radio stations.
The interim scheme was introduced from 31 January, and has been taken up by 42 commercial radio stations, with almost 200 opting to shut their streaming down rather than take the risk of excessive fees being backdated.
It has been speculated that metropolitan radio stations streaming services would also have been shut down, were it not for the ARN’s investment in iHeartRadio making the group unwilling to turn off their streaming, thus meaning SCA and DMG, understandably, retained their metropolitan streams for competitive reasons
A key concern for the radio industry is that the PPCA has said that the interim fee structure presently in place should not be regarded as an indication of what it would like the final fee structure to be, and that it believes the interim structure is inadequate.
Furthermore, any higher fees imposed will be likely to be backdated.
Take 40 add co-host
Take 40 Australia has been hosted solo by Angus O’Loughlin since August last year. Now, he’s getting a co-host.
Channel Eleven’s The Loop host Ash London will team up with Angus to present the show across the country every weekend.
Ash says: “This is a huge privilege. Ten years ago I did work experience at Take 40, doing coffee runs and writing album reviews for the website, so to be hosting it now is so exciting! All I need now is a coffee with Ricky Martin and all of my childhood dreams will have come true.”
