Bring Me The Horizon
That's The Spirit
(SME)Out September 11
UK metalcore stalwarts Bring Me The Horizon have That’s The Spirit, their fifth studio album set for release on September 11 through Sony Music. Having undergone a complete transformation since their debut deathcore album Count Your Blessings, the bandhave now refined their sound to the point where the potential to fill out stadiums and earn #1 debuts is very much real. The band already have two #1 ARIA charting albums in There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret and most recently, Sempiternal. That same album saw the band take on their most commercial sound yet, cutting back on the more abrasive end screaming vocals and throwing in sweeping soundscapes provided by a permanent synth/keys player and a more accessible songwriting approach. It also earned them radio play in Australia, with triple j being early adopters and many community stations picking up shortly after. This continueswith the latest crop of singles to be taken from the forthcoming album;both Drown and Happy Song are already doing their rounds on alternative radio in Australia (Drown peaked at #13 on the TMN Alt chart while Happy Song is currently sitting at #6). The new singles have proven to be the group's most commercially accessible tracks as well. Lead single Drown is a stadium rock sing-along,while Happy Song takes an almost 2000s era Marilyn Manson approach with comparatively soft spoken verses contrasted with incredibly crunchy sounding guitars and female led chants to fill in the gaps, definitely evoking memories of mOBSCENE. Once September roles around BMTH will assuredly be holding their next #1 album and the key to their commercial breakthrough.
The Rubens
Hoops
(MUSHROOM) OutAugust 7
Menangle country boys The Rubens have their sophomore album Hoops set for release next week on August 7 through Ivy League Records. Grammy-winning producer David Kahne (The Strokes, Lana Del Rey) takes the production reins on this record yet again (he worked on their self-titled Platinum-certifieddebut album) while also having producer Michael Brauer (Coldplay) come in to mix. Two singles have been serviced off the album so far, lead single Hallelujah and title track Hoops. So far both singles have had success on alternative radio with Hoops peaking at #28 so far on the TMN Alt chart while Hallelujah has actually broken into the TMN Hot 100 and peaked at #67. Though Hallelujah sticks to the more rock-focused sound that the band is known for, Hoops sees the group take a heavily R&B tinged approach, proving they cant be easily pigeonholed into a single genre, and further increasing their accessibility. The group have also announced the Hoops national tour to follow the album launch, taking them all across the country and not leaving regional Australia neglected with various regional dates included on the tour.
