Vale Stephen Kelly

In sad news this morning, news has come in that Stephen Kelly, the Chief Financial Officer for Southern Cross Media, passed away at the weekend.

On Friday SCA announced that he would be taking indefinite leave to seek medical treatment, and at 9.30 this morning they have released a statement confirming his passing on Sunday.

In the statement, SCA has said: “Stephen was a highly respected member of our senior team and held in deep admiration and affection by our board, our company, its staff and the investor community.

“We offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the many friends that Steve had at SCMG and, more importantly, to his wife Alex, children Josh and Ben, and his many friends.” READ MORE


Hear Fox FM’s new breakfast show

Another brand new metro FM breakfast show has debuted this morning, this time in Melbourne.

With the departure of Matt & Jo last year, the new Fox FM breakfast show in 2014 features Fifi Box and Dave Thornton (with anchor Dan Anstey – formerly of Hughesy & Kate).

SCA release December digital stats

Southern Cross Austereo have released their monthly digital stats which show the network have increased their Australian Monthly Unique Visitors by 290% year on year, now 2.1 million.

The Today and Triple M networks both saw growth year on year for unique visitors, up 196% and 180% respectively. READ MORE


Merrick who?

The Daily Telegraph published an article on the weekend on what they have referred to as ’the next phase as rival radio stations ready for battle’.

The article is focused on the FM band and refers to Kyle & Jackie O at KIIS as being in one corner, and the ’experimental’ show of Merrick, Jules, Sophie and Mel B on 2Day in the other in the ’ultimate showdown’.

But perhaps Merrick isn’t who he seems. READ MORE 


Heather Stott departs 4BC afternoon show

4BC’s new afternoon host Heather Stott, who was to work with Michael Price in 2014, is leaving the show due to family reasons.

Stott announced her decision to the 4BC listeners on Friday saying she is following her heart and needs to spend more time with one of her younger sons.

“When you join a program like this, you have to be 100% in and it’s not the kind of commitment I can give right now,” said a disappointed Stott. READ MORE


Mitch Braund joins Mix Melbourne

Former Mix 106.5 Sydney breakfast EP Mitch Braund is joining the Mix Melbourne team.

In a newly created role, Mitch will be the Head of Presentation.

Mitch was EP of Sami & Yumi from mid last year but left in October to return to Brisbane to be closer to his family. READ MORE


Hinch refuses to pay fine, goes to jail

Back in October, Derryn Hinch was found guilty of breaching a court suppression order over information he published on his Human Headline website about the Jill Meagher case.

Hinch’s lawyer then defended the claims, saying the website only had 797 individual views over a 4 day period when the suppression order was in place.

Hinch received a $100,000 fine.

He has now come out and said that rather than pay the fine he will go to jail for 50 days. READ MORE  


New Today weekend show revealed

Last week we told you that former Fifi & Jules anchor Byron Cooke is now the new morning announcer on Fox FM.

At the time we were told that there would be more news to come on his role at Fox later in the week.

Byron is going to team up with Jo Stanley (ex-Fox breakfast) and Michael Beveridge (SAFM breakfast) to host a new weekend breakfast show to be heard across the Today network.

The previous weekend show featured Dave Thornton (now Fox breakfast) and Sophie Monk (now 2Day FM breakfast). READ MORE


Southern Cross Director resigns

Southern Cross Media, the parent of SCA, has announced the resignation of Director Marina Darling.

Darling has been a Director of SCM since September 2011, and prior to that a Director of Southern Cross Broadcasting since 1999.

In a statement, Chairman Max Moore-Wilton said: “On behalf of the SCMG Board and management, I thank Marina for her commitment and dedication and wish her well in her future endeavours”. READ MORE

Cale Porter is the new Nova 919 Adelaide afternoon announcer, replacing Jaben Ryan.

Sue Chapman, Fairfax Melbourne Sales Director, has decided to finish full-time work after 30 years.

Former 4BH PD Geoff Harrison, who was made redundant back in October, has moved into politics and is working for Nationals Senator for Queensland, the Hon. Ron Boswell.

AFTRS graduate Caitlin Nienabar is now working in the Wave FM Wollongong newsroom.

The Edge NZ has added comedian Guy Williams to the drive show. He will join current hosts Sharyn Casey and Clint Roberts

Two months after getting his first gig out of AFTRS, Harry Dodshon has already moved from being Hot 100 Darwin’s afternoon announcer / production person and will now do breakfast.

SCA’s Adelaide Sales Director Rick Tyrrell has started this week as the Agency Sales Director for B105 / Triple M in Brisbane.

The new SCA Adelaide Sales Director will be Rob Iannazzo who was ARN’s Melbourne Sales Director.

Krista Thomas will be Kyle & Jackie O’s newsreader on KIIS 1065.

ABC News Breakfast TV host Virginia Trioli is moving back to radio to host AM on ABC Radio, replacing Tony Eastley.

Current host of AM, Tony Eastley, is moving back to TV to be a senior presenter on ABC News 24.

Tim Latham, who has worked with Fran Kelly on RN for 8 years, is now EP of Media Watch.

Dane ’Gurks’ McGuirk has left Power FM in the Hunter Valley to take up a breakfast gig at Star FM in Griffith.

Former Fifi & Jules anchor Byron Cooke is the new morning announcer on Fox FM in 2014.

Heidi Murphy is the new Senior Producer for 3AW’s Neil Mitchell in 2014. She replaces Justin Smith who is off to present drive on 2UE.

Katie Hale from the 2Day / Triple M newsroom is moving to TV to be a news producer on TEN’s Wake Up.
