Melissa Doyle joins smoothfm

Former Sunrise host, and now news presenter, Melissa Doyle is joining the smoothfm lineup.

Starting this weekend she will host a Saturday/Sunday morning breakfast show from 6am to 10am.

CRA talk up DAB+ at audio show

Late last week Commercial Radio Australia presented the benefits of DAB+ at the Australian Audio and AV Show at the Intercontinental Hotel, Melbourne.

The event featured over 70 exhibitors showcasing audio and entertainment technology to 7000 attendees.

Hinch won’t be going to jail

Earlier this month, Derryn Hinch was found guilty of breaching a court suppression order over information he published on his Human Headline website about the Jill Meagher case.

Hinch’s lawyer recently defended the claims, saying the website only had 797 individual views over a 4 day period when the suppression order was in place. 3AW reported that outside court Hinch said he was “gutted”. “I just don’t think I’ve done anything. I think I’ve been made the scapegoat, the whipping boy.”

Hinch was back in court on Friday to receive his sentence. Justice Stephen Kaye said that what Hinch had done did not impact on the Bayley trial and therefore he won’t be going to jail but will be fined $100,000. READ MORE

SCA release new apps

SCA released 75 new smartphone apps last week that cover the whole network, metro and regional.

Director of Digital & Innovation Clive Dickens said:

“This is a huge milestone for our business. Now audiences from every corner of Australia have the ability to listen to any of our 83 local and digital free to air radio stations wherever they go. Within the past year our mobile website traffic has increased by over 500%, so it is more important than ever that we continue to re-define the way our listeners enjoy radio content.” READ MORE

Finalists for Walkley Awards announced

Finalists in the 58th annual Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism have been announced.

With 1335 entries, award winners will be announced on November 28 at a gala dinner at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane. The ceremony will also be broadcast on ABC3 and streamed on the ABC website with a one-hour highlights show airing on ABC1 on Sunday, December 1.

Finalists in the Radio/Audio News & Current Affairs category see 2 Melbourne radio heavyweights competing :-

ABC774’s Jon Faine is nominated for ’Police officer, accused for a decade of murdering gangland informants, comes clean’, where Faine interviewed a former Victoria Police detective about his involvement in several Melbourne underworld murders, bringing him to tears.

3AW’s Neil Mitchell is also nominated for ’The Ford scoop’, where he broke and confirmed the news that Ford was closing its manufacturing operations in Australia.

The 3rd finalist in this category is Stephen McDonell from PM on ABC Radio. READ MORE

SAFM’s Hollywood billboard

SAFM in Adelaide have come up with a unique way to get Hollywood celebs to be on their breakfast show with Michael, Hayley & Burgo.

As part of a proactive pitch to local cinema company Wallis, the station have erected a billboard in Hollywood asking celebrities to call the show.

The Hollywood Hotline will be answered, any time of the day or night, by either Michael, Hayley or Burgo.

The billboard went up last Monday and will be up for 5 weeks. Already they’ve had 10 to 15 calls from people who have done bits and pieces of acting. READ MORE

92.9 reveal new breakfast show

In the past 2 weeks, two-thirds of the 92.9 breakfast show in Perth, Lisa Fernandez and Paul Hogan, announced their departures.

The station have now revealed their new breakfast show as Will, Woody and Heidi Anderson from NXFM (and Big Brother).

The new show will start November 11 and will be on-air for the last 3 weeks of the survey year, allowing them time to get warmed up before 2014 begins. READ MORE

4BH make Program Director redundant

Fairfax Radio has made the role of 4BH Program Director Geoff Harrison redundant.

The General Manager for Fairfax Radio Brisbane, Anthony Frangi, has said that the business is focused on building stronger departments and creating a powerful vision for both 4BH and 4BC.

As part of that focus, the decision has been taken that 4BH will no longer require a Program Director.

Harrison joined 4BH in 1997 and was appointed Program Director in 2006. READ MORE

Ryan Stuart (Ryzy), the Operations Manager / MD for SCA Digital Radio in Sydney, is moving to KOFM Newcastle to be their Assistant Content Director.

92.9 Perth have announced their new breakfast show as ’Heidi, Will & Woody’.

With Heidi moving to 92.9, ex-Sea FM Sunshine Coast breakfast host Sophie Tiller, who filled in for Heidi when she was on Big Brother, will be the new co-host of NXFM breakfast with Heath and Normy.

B105 workday announcer Pete Curulli has resigned from the station.
