Nominations for 2016 NIMAs open
Nominations for the National Indigenous Music Awards [NIMAs] open today and this year has a theme, protest songs.
As pointed out by the Awards’ organisers, 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the Wave Hill walk off, the 40th anniversary of the Land Rights Act, 30 years since the release of Yothu Yindi’s double platinum selling album Tribal Voice and 24 years since the group’s seminal single Treaty hit #11 on the ARIA charts.
This year’s NIMAs in August will play host to a diverse lineup of acts, including a few leading Non-Indigenous musicians, who have have made a mark on the Indigenous political landscape with iconic songs.

Nominations for the Awards have opened today for both the industry and the general public at musicnt.com.au.
2015’s NIMAs saw performances by Frank Yamma, The Painted Ladies, Vic Simm, B2M and the Australian premiere of the East Journey/Yothu Yindi EP collaboration,The Genesis Project.
The NIMAs will be held in Darwin on Saturday August 6 as part of the Darwin Festival. The Awards are presented by peak music association Music NT in partnership with the NT Government. Nominations closeJune 17.
