Newtown Festival turning 40, more initiatives to raise donations for Inner West
Newtown Festival celebrates its 40th this year, igniting Camperdown Memorial Park on Sunday, November 11 from 9.30 am to 5 pm.
It is the primary fundraiser for the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre to provide frontline services for those doing it most tough in Sydney’s Inner West.
Over the last year funds raised through Newtown festival enabled NNC to take proactive location action to respond to growing rates of homelessness in the community.
As a result, just last month, seven people were assisted to access ongoing temporary housing.
This would not have happened without the outreach work over the last few months.
The Centre’s CEO Liz Yeo said: “The festival started just one year after Newtown Neighbourhood Centre to raise funds for the work of the Centre.
“While the Festival has grown and changed significantly over those 40 years, it has remained true to its core purpose – to be a festival that inspires and supports social change. “
Last year, the festival introduced the expected $5 entry ($10 to include a reusable water bottle) and over 40,000 people contributed at the entry gates.
This year it is expected for a higher funds intake with the series expanding with 10+ events on offer through October and November.
The series includes kids’ workshops, intimate gigs, street art, an open-air cinema, story sessions and lessons in sustainability.
Further details on the NNC Festival Series will be announced soon.
People can get involved in various ways, by holding a food or market stall, becoming a festival partner, performing on the day, displaying their art, volunteering their time or just giving generously when they donate at the gate.
