The search has begun to find Music's new CEO.

QMusic, the Queensland music industry body behind BIGSOUND, announced today that it's “commenced the formal process” to find and appoint its new CEO.

Music has engaged executive search firm u&u Recruitment Partners to lead the independent recruitment campaign, with the role now live.

"The recruitment of our next CEO is a critical step in QMusic's next phase," Board Chair Jake Challenor says. "To ensure a rigorous and independent process, we have engaged executive search firm u&u Recruitment Partners to lead the campaign.

“QMusic has strong momentum, a clear strategic direction, and an important role to play in supporting Queensland's music ecosystem. We are focused on appointing a leader who can build on this foundation and guide the organisation into its next chapter.”

For now, Kristy Ellis will continue serving as Interim QMusic CEO, leading the organisation through both the recruitment process and handover.

Ellis took over from former CEO Kris Stewart, who announced his departure from the key role after a five-year tenure in March.

"I feel that I can honestly say I'm leaving the organisation in an undeniably strong position, both financially and culturally, following five surplus years and long-term funding commitments from Federal, State and Local government. We've more than doubled the turnover - and the number of partners," Stewart wrote in a LinkedIn post at the time.

“[…] I'm proud of the support we've garnered for the industry - more than $20m of QLD government support for initiatives such as the Qld Performing Arts Market Development Fund and the Qld music venues support package; $3.6m funding uplift for BIGSOUND; advocating as a witness in the Federal Government Inquiry in Live Music; and being a part of the creation of the Night Life Economy Commission,” he added.

Stewart joined QMusic in June 2021 after working as Brisbane Powerhouse's Artistic Director for eight years.
