New Aussie label Break Even Recordings reveals first release

Break Even Recordings has been launched as an imprint of independent heavyweight Inertia, with the new label made up ofRyan Saar, Bree Wilkinson, George Gillies and Tom Grant.

The label is being pitched as an outlet for the exploration of diverse, interesting and inspirational sounds, and has today released its first single care of Brisbane band Nice Biscuit.

The six-piece outfit have dropped ’Captain’, following its debut spin last night on triple j’sHome & Hosed Australian new music show.

If it’s diverse and interesting sounds that Break Even are pitching, then ’Captain’ is a perfect start, as the track drips with psych-pop sensibilities, is underpinned by a heavy, a driving rhythm section and topped off by the double-barrel harmonies of singers Billie Star and Grace Cuell.

“Nice Biscuit were an obvious choice to begin the label with, namely because there’s no one else doing what they’re doing in the Australian landscape,” Break Evenrevealed toTMN.

“They’re completely unique in their songwriting – they mesh together genres with ease, combining disparate influences into an avalanche of heart-stopping sound. Not to mention their live show, which is a wholly unique experience in itself – with the combination of costume, choreography, and raw power, it’s impossible to rip your eyes off them!

“Plus, they’re all such fun and easy-going people to hang out with, it was aneasy decision to ask them whetherthey wanted to release some music together – we’re thrilled that they said yes!”

Nice Biscuit are clearly on the up, after winning triple j’s Unearthed spot at Bigsound 2017, and having since released singles ’Boogie Board Much Around and ’In Space Today’, the latter of which has seen spins on triple j and FBi Radio.

Off the back of this latest single they’ll head off on an east coast tour of Australia in March, including shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, as well as a set at PANAMA Festival in Tasmania.
