Sync Watch: New Netflix series features Kids At Midnight track
Melbourne songwriter and producer Kids At Midnight has landed a Netflix sync.
The new series, Never Have I Ever, is an American “coming of age dramedy” and stars Canadian actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and features the track ‘Boys Like You’.
Landing such the placement was no mean feat for the fully independent act, she’s been self-releasing on her own label Square Pleasure since 2015.
The production team reached out late last year after hearing the heartfelt teen anthem while looking for the perfect track to close the final scene of the first season.
Two music supervisors are working on the show, Brienne Rose and Joseph Stephens.
The program was created by Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling, whose credits include The Office, The Mindy Project, Oceans 8, and premiered overnight in the US to rave reviews from critics.
Jane Elizabeth Hanley, aka Kids At Midnight, is “psyched” to be part of the series soundtrack.
“Mindy Kaling is a personal hero of mine,” she said. “I’ve had an unhealthy reliance on The Office since it’s air date and I love her unashamedly nerdy rom com perspective in her other projects.
“I guess because it’s the world I write from too,” said Hanley.
An 80s indie synth-pop gem ‘Boys Like You’ is all about those awkward moments of teen romance, high school socials and heartbreaking first loves.
Here is my reaction ???? *spoiler alert* don’t watch if you’re currently starting @neverhaveiever bc this is the big end scene… pic.twitter.com/FQk8qNBK3L

“The fact it’s being used on a Mindy Kaling Netflix series with the tagline ‘High-key nerds. Low-key virgins…’, it’s perfect. And the fact that it plays over the big finale moment is too much!
“That’s the most 80s teen movie thing that could ever happen to this little song I made in my bedroom. I can’t wait to watch it!”.
‘Boys Like You’ will appear on the debut album from Kids At Midnight later this year.
