Neil Finn’s new album is on track for a top ten debut
Neil Finn took a novel approach with his new album, Out Of Silence, recording it live over four consecutive Fridays in August, while broadcasting this process on his Facebook page.
The result is a stately and beautiful collection of songs, which — despite what the live public record tells us is true — sounds like it was laboured over for months. It’s an album of lush tones, and Finn’s vocal takes are perfect, and find him using his falsetto more than ever before in his career.
Finn also addresses current affairs more than a few times, not a topic often found in his catalogue of dreamlike, depressed, darkly romantic songs.
The album is on track to debut in the top 10 of the ARIA Albums chart this week. Despite the unusual roll-out and recording hook, Out Of Silence has kind of snuck onto the landscape. It should hopefully stick around the higher reaches for a few weeks, much like Paul Kelly’s Life is Fine.
Finn shares a similar audience to Kelly, and will, like Kelly, make the majority of his numbers through what are now known as ‘traditional’ album sales.
Noise 11 reported that Kelly had sold 14,000 units as of last weekend. Over 80% have been physical CD sales, with only 205 sales (or the equivalent of) coming from streaming.
Finn’s top 10 debut will have been driven by digital sales and streams only. The CD version of Out of Silence comes out next Friday, September 15, with vinyl out a few weeks after that.
This should (again, hopfully) see the album enjoy a prolonged chart run.
The ARIA charts are released at 6pm on Saturday.
