Music industry pays tribute to ‘ultimate professional’ audio engineer Greg Weaver

The music community is paying tribute to veteran audio engineer and industry all-rounder Greg Weaver, who passed away suddenly on Sunday. It’s understood Greg Weaver died from a heart attack.

Weaver earned a reputation as one of the finest audio engineers in the business, though he was just as adept at handling other aspects of live performance, from general tour management and production to front-of-house.

The late music professional worked closely with Paul Kelly for more than a decade and was a key man on Tim Minchin’s recently-completed, 40-date “BACK (Old Songs, New Songs, F**k You Songs)” tour, even appearing in Minchin’s final-night team photo.

Two-time APRA Award winner Dean Lewis would also rely on Weaver to help his shows run smoothly, and sound perfect.

Ball Park Music, The Whitlams, and The Sundance Kids were among the many artists who worked with Greg Weaver, who was remembered as the “ultimate professional,” and a person of integrity, with a kind, intelligent and humble nature.

‘Professional’ may not seem the warmest possible term, but in Greg’s case it was part of his truly unique character and a genuine expression of his passion for music and for the artists he worked with,” reads a social media statement posted by Ball Park Music. “His fastidiousness, his preparedness and his unbreakable good attitude helped create an environment of trust, respect and happiness.” The tribute continues, “He was a one-of-a-kind person and an unsung hero of the Australian music landscape”

A separate statement from The Sundance Kids reads: “It’s with great sadness that we hear of the passing of tour manager and sound guru Greg Weave. I remember when we were fresh faced on the tour circuit and had no clue what we were doing but he treated us with the utmost respect as he did with everyone. He helped us when he didn’t have to and was the ultimate professional. We truly admired how he worked and the care and love he showed all the artists he worked with.”
