Mushroom MD Ian James and triple j both up for International Music Industry Awards

Mushroom Music Publishing MD Ian James and national youth radio broadcaster triple j are both up for an International Music Industry Award.

Hosted by MusExpo during the conference in LA on April 29, the industry-voted awards – now in their second year – will recognise the ‘best in show’ for various sectors of the international music industry.

Ian James, who has held his post at Mushroom since 1988, is up against UMPG Chairman/CEO Jody Gerson, Songs Music Publishing Pres./Head of A&R Ron Perry and Kobalt Founder/CEO Willard Ahdritz for top Music Publisher.

James is also Chairman at AMCOS, Deputy Chairman at APRA, aDirector at AMPAL, and last January joined Victoria University's College Of Business as an adjunct professor. Last year Mushroom Publishing Group made history as the first publisher behind each Song of the Year nominee for the 2014 APRA Awards.

“I have been to every ARIA Awards and every APRA Awards since they started," James told TMN."I doubt if anyone else in the music industry has done that. So I have gotten used to seeing the Mushroom writers and artists being nominated and quite often winning. It therefore comes as a very pleasant surprise to find myself in a position that my acts have been in, and get the same type of adolescent thrill from it like the new bands do. The other nominees are formidable so I feel I am in exalted company. I have no idea what I will say if I win but 'oh my god I’m speechless'is unlikely.”

triple j, which celebrated its 40th year last week, is up against Holland station 3FM, UK broadcast juggernaut BBC Radio 1 and US station SiriusXM for Best Radio Station. The station which still operates under the breif laid downby Gough Whitlam’s government in 1975 and has unearthed some of the entertainment industry's most lauded figures (Wil Anderson, Stu Harvey, Charlie Pickering, Jane Gazzo, Merrick Watts)and of course many of Australia's most treasured artists like Grinspoon, who was the first band to be 'unearthed' by triple jin 1995.:

“We’re really proud to be nominated as one of the best radio stations in the world," triple j ManagerChris Scaddantold TMN."We’re currently celebrating 40 years as a network and reflecting on our humble beginnings as Double J in the 70s, so to be recognised internationally for our contribution to the music community around the world is extremely rewarding.”

New Zealand artist No Wyld received a nomination in the Unsigned Artist Of The Year category. The Auckland hip hop/rock trio are up against UK singer-songwriter Laurel, German soul artist Malky and Swedish electro-pop artist Tove Styrke.

Up for the Industry Executive award are Irving Azoff, Live Nation Pres./CEO Michael Rapino, Republic Records Chairman/CEO Monte Lipman and Capitol Music Group Chairman/CEO Steve Barnett. Universal Music Group Chairman & CEO Lucian Graingetook out he top honour last year.

At the inaugural awards last year Michael Chugg was awarded Best Festival Promoter while Tim Youngson & Scott MacLachlan of New Zealand’s Saiko Management were named Best Talent Managers.

The top four in each category were voted by professionals in the worldwide music industry based on criteria covering their contributions to the industry and the positive effect on the evolution of their respective areas. Final voting closes Sunday February 24 (AEST) with winners announced at the Gala Dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on April 29. See here for the voting form.
