Morgan Wallen and Dua Lipa dominated sales and streams in 2021

Morgan Wallen and Dua Lipa had huge years for sales and streaming respectively in 2021.

As 2022 gets going, MRC Data has announced its end-of-year numbers for 2021. As reported by Billboard, Wallen’s commercial status wasn’t affected at all by the controversy that plagued him throughout last year. The country star had the highest-selling album of the year in the U.S., with Dangerous: The Double Album shifting 3.23 million units.

He was followed by Olivia Rodrigo’s breakout album Sour (2.8 million units) and Drake’s Certified Lover Boy (1.9 million units). The top five was completed by Adele’s 30 and Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon, despite the latter coming out all the way back in July 2020.

Adele’s latest dominated when it came to combined physical and digital sales, shifting 1.464 million units. 30 was followed a long way back by Taylor Swift‘s Red (Taylor’s Version) which sold 621,000 copies. Rodrigo’s Sour did well again, shifting 557,000 copies.

Dua Lipa had the most streamed song of the year with ‘Levitating’, perhaps surprisingly beating out Rodrigo’s massive hit ‘drivers license’. The latter also completed the top three with ‘good 4 u’, with the top Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero (Call Me by Your Name)’ and The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber’s collaboration ‘Stay’ rounding out the top five.
