Ministry Of Sound Australia’s Recordings rebranded as TMRW Music
Ministry of Sound Australia has had a major facelift.
The dance music specialist has been renamed TMRW Music (pronounced Tomorrow), some 10 months after Ministry of Sound Recordings U.K. was sold to Sony Music U.K.
So what does it all mean for the Australian company? Among the most visible changes, all MoS compilations in Australia will be issued through Sony Music Australia from July 1 and any new recordings releases under its sublabels Hussle, Downright and Astrx will now be through TMRW Music, with immediate effect.
And as part of the revamp, Tim McGee, CEO of Ministry of Sound Australia since its inception 17 years ago, becomes CEO of TMRW Music. The company’s official website also goes live today.
Otherwise, it’s business as usual for the recordings business, reps say. There will be no changes to the staff or roster of artists and the Sydney-based company’s touring and events businesses, Ministry of Sound Club and other MoS-branded events and tours will continue to operate.
Ahead of today’s announcement, McGee exclusively told TIO, “We are excited to begin a new licence with Ministry of Sound U.K. for our events business Soapbox Events and the new Ministry of Sound Club at ivy and to continue to grow our successful recordings business at TMRW Music. McGee will continue to serve as CEO of Soapbox Events and Soapbox Agency.
In a statement announcing the changes, Jonathan Bevan, CEO of Ministry of Sound Group, added, “Ministry of Sound Group has had a long-standing relationship with Tim and Ministry of Sound Australia and have always found them to be exceptional partners. We are excited about extending our partnership and about Soapbox Events’ plans for Ministry of sound branded events and the Ministry of Sound Club at ivy.”
Ministry of Sound has a storied history in club culture. The U.K. arm of MoS Recordings was established in 1993 as an extension of James Palumbo’s superclub of that name, which opened its doors two years earlier in the drab South London suburb of Elephant and Castle suburb. Business for MoS was anything but drab. A compilations powerhouse was built (70 million units sold and counting) and MoS looked to expand its empire with an outpost Down Under.
The company tapped McGee, a former Central Station exec, to launch the business in 2000 and in 2004 it became an Australian-owned enterprise with a brand licence to the U.K. company. Hussle Recordings also arrived in 2000 and has gone on to release tracks from the likes of Love Tattoo, Bob Sinclar, Ferry Corsten and Benny Benassi. The label continues to grow with releases from multi-platinum selling artists like Timmy Trumpet, notes McGee, and the Australian company has reportedly shifted some 7 million album units.
