Live Biz Welcomes Latest American Express Music Initiative
Live music executives in NSW have welcomed the latest American Express music initiative, hopeful it will energise Sydney as the sector returns.
Back The Night sees 17 acts playing six inner west venues on Sunday, May 29.
All proceeds go to Support Act which, since the pandemic, reported an 883% rise in music workers seeking crisis relief and a 52% increase in those accessing the Wellbeing Helpline.
“From artists, performers, venues, businesses and all of the people behind the scenes, Back The Night is an important kick-start to help the industry head into a brighter future they so wholeheartedly deserve,” Amex’s vice president of brand and member experience, Naysla Edwards, said.
London Grammar, back in Australia after five years, will play Oxford Art Factory from 7:30 p.m.
There are DJ sets from The Delta Riggs, Taka Perry, IMBI and Bec Sandridge and live performances from Didirri, Boy and Bear, Alex Lahey, Odette, Bakers Eddy, Cap Carter, Maple Glider, Jess Kent and Maddy Jane.
Venues include the Colombian, Hyde Park House, Surly’s American Tavern and Mrs Palmer.
Mark Gerber, founder and CEO of Oxford Art Factory, said the live biz witnessed businesses shut down during the pandemic.
“After what has felt like a lifetime, we’re stoked to be opening our doors again and not only be a part of this event, which spans across and supports so many venues and artists, but to host headliners London Grammar for what will be a very special evening of music,” he said.
Michael Rodrigues, 24 Hour Economy Commissioner for NSW added that Sydney’s night-time economy is already bouncing back.
“Audiences are keen to get back out and enjoy what this beautiful city has to offer,” he said. “American Express’ Back The Night will help energise the city by supporting a variety of local businesses while assisting our musos to do what they do best: entertain and inspire us.”
Tickets are on sale Monday, May 2. See the full lineup and buy tickets here.
