Lithe Leads Spotify’s Australian Charge In First Half

Lithe Leads Spotify’s Australian Charge In First Half

Lithe tops Australia’s global leaderboard on Spotify for the first half of 2024.

The Melbourne hip-hop singer and songwriter comes in at No. 1 on Spotify Australia’s Australian Music Global Impact List, a gauge of the hottest border-crossing songs from the land Down Under.

Lithe (real name: Josiah Ramel) broke through this year with “Fall Back”, which, after going viral, led Spotify’s Viral Charts and went to No. 1 globally in May on Instagram Reels. He doubles up on the Spotify list with “Like We Wrote,” arriving at No. 28.

Blending hip-hop, R&B, future trap and soul, Lithe’s works have amassed more than 200 million streams across all platforms, with no record label. He tested them on live audiences last month when his tour “What Would You Do,” presented by Untitled Group, visited Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

Completing the podium is Chris Lake, FISHER, Gotye, Kimbra and Sante Sansone’s “Somebody,” which interpolates Gotye’s global smash from 2013, “Somebody That I Used to Know,” plus “Lighter,” by 5 Seconds of Summer, David Guetta and Galantis, respectively.

The Australian Music Global Impact List ranks the top 30 tracks from Aussie artists outside of Australia, for tracks released between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2024.

The list is stacked with familiar names, from Tame Impala to The Kid Laroi, Tones And I, Empire of the Sun, Kylie Minogue and others.

Among the fresh faces are 20-year-old Melbourne producer Tobiahs (“Lifetime” at No. 4), dance act ARXMANE (“MONTAGEM INVASÃO” at No. 7 and No. 16) and indie breakout act Royel Otis with a pair of covers: Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder On The Dancefloor” (at No. 5) and The Cranberries’ “Linger” at No. 12.

“Now that we are in our second year of publishing our Spotify Australian Music Global Impact List,” says Spotify Australia artist & label partnership lead Leah Harris, “it’s been fantastic to see how both emerging and established acts continue to make a big impact overseas.”

The latest list, adds Harris, “is an excellent snapshot of local artists having an impact on the global stage. We’re proud to be playing our part in helping Australian artists be discovered by global audiences to gain meaningful career growth and viable, long-term success as a result.”

The report, published today, July 22, follows Spotify’s 2023 Loud & Clear report, which revealed that more than than 80% of all royalties generated by Australian artists on Spotify were generated on the streamer’s music fans outside of Australia.

Also, royalties generated by Australian artists from Spotify in 2023 reportedly reached nearly $275 million, up almost 10% since 2022.
