Katy Perry’s Chained To The Rhythm sets new Spotify record

Katy Perry’s new single Chained To The Rhythm has set a new record on Spotify. It has generated 3,062,293 streams – setting a new milestone for the highest first-day streaming tally for a single track by a female artist.

The track soared after Perry’s performance at the Grammys ceremony yesterday. However, Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You still holds the all-time Spotify record with 6,868,642 streams in one day.

Perry’s last single Rise, her Rio Olympics 2016 song, didn’t make as much of a splash on Spotify playlists. This is because the track was initilly released as an Apple Music exclusive.

The track reached #1 in Australia and Top 5 in Scotland and France. But it failed to be as huge as expected, peaking at #11 in the US and debuting in the UK at #25.

In the case of the new single, Chained To The Rhythm, Perry and Spotify are working together.

Spotify offered her towering billboards in Los Angeles and London, and is actively promoting the track right up until the northern summer release of her fifth studio album.

With 100 million users and 40 million subscribers, Spotify intends to prove to the singer, and other acts, they can help sell records and concert tickets more than any other traditional platform like radio or TV, or its digital rivals.

And with Lady Gaga’s former manager Troy Carter now on board to entice more acts, Spotify heavily promoted The Weeknd’s Starboy album which went to #1 in America for five weeks, and also helped sell tickets for singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes’ US arena tour.

Katy Perry’s last album Prism (2013) sold 4 million copies, the best selling album by a female in the world, and second biggest selling record in Australia in that particular year.

Teenage Dream (2010) remains her best seller however, with 6 million sales globally, three million of those in the United States. Teenage Dream is the second album in history to have five number ones from the one album (after Michael Jackson’s 1987 album Bad) and the first by a female to achieve this milestone.

Backed by Spotify’s support, it’ll be interesting to see if this year’s album breaks these sales records.
