Julia Zemiro and Jerome Farah to host 2022 APRA Awards

Veteran presenter Julia Zemiro and artist Jerome Farah are on hosting duties for the 2022 APRA Music Awards, which returns to Melbourne this May for its 40th anniversary edition.

The historic Melbourne Town Hall is the venue for the 2022 APRAs, locked in for Tuesday, May 3, with Grammy Award-winning producer François Tétaz returning as Musical Director for a sixth time.

“For 40 years the APRA Awards have celebrated the power of great songwriting,” acknowledges Dean Ormston, CEO of APRA AMCOS.

“This year, like never before, it is great Australian songwriting that is bringing together people and communities, defining who we are culturally and demanding the attention of global audiences,” he continues.

“It is part of a new wave of success that combines local storytelling with international collaboration, and is driving a new boom in truly great music.”

As previously reported, Tones And I, Tim Minchin, Matt Corby and Baker Boy are among the artists shortlisted for Song of the Year, one of the Australian music industry’s most coveted prizes.

All told, 20 songs are nominated for the peer-voted category, which represents the works chosen by APRA AMCOS members as the “finest of 2021.”

Melbourne Town Hall was the setting of the 2019 APRA Awards, the last to be held before the pandemic scrubbed live events from the calendar.

This year’s APRAs should be a special coming-out party for a city that, just six months ago, was stuck in the longest lockdown for any city on the planet.

“It is an honour to acknowledge the artistry and success of Australia’s songwriters wherever they are in the world and the incredible support of the music publishing community,” adds Ormston in a statement.

“It will be a great night – acknowledging the richness of the last 40 years, and the very bright future for Australian songwriting both here and around the world.”

The annual APRA Music Awards celebrate “excellence in contemporary music” by recognising songwriters and publishers that have “achieved artistic excellence and outstanding success in their fields.”

The shortlisted Song of the Year playlists can be streamed on SpotifyApple Music and YouTube Music

The full list of nominations will be announced on Thursday April 7.
