John Lennon’s childhood home to be auctioned

The childhood home of John Lennon will be sold at auction later this month.

Lennon lived at 9 Newcastle Road in Wavertree with his parents and grandparents until he was five years old. The property is also close to Penny Lane and it is thought to be where Lennon wrote the song One After 909 while visiting his grandparents.

The three-bedroom terrace home will go to auction on 29 October at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, where the Beatles performed many of their early gigs.

The reportedly “modest” home also has two reception rooms, a kitchen and a small backyard. The current owner said he has retained many of the property’s original structures, including the Victorian sliding slash windows.

Stephen Giddins, regional sales director of selling agent Entwistle Green, said: “Although the property is in need of some modernisation, it retains some of the original features that I’m sure a new owner would wish to keep. Taking into consideration the location, the property itself and the background we expect a lot of interest locally and internationally.”

The guide price for the auction is set at is £150 000-£250 000.

Lennon’s other childhood home, at 251 Menlove Avenue in Liverpool, is preserved by the National Trust.
