Wonderlick & Sony Music sign Jess Day
Wonderlick Recording Company – the joint venture between Wonderlick Entertainment and Sony Music – has announced its latest signing, Jess Day.
The announcement accompanies the release of Day’s new single ‘Naked’, which made its debut on triple j’s Good Nights last night.
It is the first single from Day’s forthcoming EP, and the labels said it heralds a “new chapter and creative era for the dynamic performer and lyricist”.
The labels said she would continue to build her impressive catalogue of work supported by the teams at both Wonderlick and Sony.
Wonderlick co-CEO and co-founder, Stu MacQueen, explained why Day was a great fit for the label.
“Jess is just such a compelling songwriter. She always seems to be able to find a unique lyrical pathway into the central theme of her songs, and when coupled with that distinctive vocal, it really sets her apart. We love unique at Wonderlick, and we love an artist who can deliver live, and seeing Jess and her band live was the final clincher for us. Hopefully at some point soon we will be able to stand in a room together again and have amazing artists like Jess remind everyone why music and musicians are so important,” he said.
Day said the signing was an exciting benchmark after an unusual year.
“It feels like a really good fit and I’ve felt so supported and believed in by the team there from the get go. It’s a massive honour to be alongside so many amazing artists on their roster,” she added.
‘Naked’, she said, is about feeling used after finding out someone wanted ‘out’ for a while.
“It’s about thinking back on the intimate moments you shared, particularly sex through the lens of shock and disbelief that you were experiencing an entirely different connection than they were at the time. It’s about wishing you’d known sooner, not kept them around – having access to parts of you they shouldn’t anymore,” she said.
As well as generating support across triple j, Day has previously won Best Song for ‘Affection’ at the 2020 South Australian Music Awards and took home Best Solo Artist.
