Jack White LP is top selling vinyl record in two decades
When Jack White released his latest album, Lazaretto, he did so with the intent to prove that vinyl was far from dead.
According to Billboard, Lazaretto is now the biggest selling single-year release on the medium since Pearl Jam’s 1994 release Vitalogy, with 60,000 copies sold to date.
Dubbed as an Ultra LP, White and Third Man Records have included hidden tracks under the center label, a hand-etched hologram and a locked outer grove so that one side ends on a continuous loop.
Lazaretto was released on June 10 and with vinyl sales included, has sold 238,000 units across all platforms.
Of further interest to vinyl aficionados is Yahoo! Music’s compilation of the biggest selling releases of the Neilsen Soundscan era.
Whilst massive sellers like The Beatles’ Abbey Road, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago and Mumford & Sons Sigh No More all rounded out the top five, it was Disney’s The Lion King OST that took out the top spot with 1,043,000 unit. White’s Lazaretto came in at #9.
Looking at the UK’s Top 20, Oasis managed to score the top two positions with What’s The Story, Morning Glory and Definitely Maybe respectively.
Portishead’s Dummy came in at #3, whilst Travis’ The Invisible B and The King of Limbs by Radiohead took out #4 and #5.
The UK chart is according to Official Charts Company and comes via NME.
