J-MILLA on the upcoming South Australian Music Awards

J-MILLA on the upcoming South Australian Music Awards

With just a matter of days to go until the winners of the 2020 South Australian Music Awards (the SAMs) are announced, TIO has spoken to one of this year’s nominees to get an understanding of what they mean of the local industry.

Having adopted the name of the South Australian Music Awards in 2015 after a few years as the Fowler’s Live Music Awards, the SAMs have since become a way for the South Australian music industry to pay proper tribute to its illustrious scene, and honour the countless artists, managers, venues, and folks behind the scene that help to turn Adelaide into a world-class music destination.

Next week, the 2020 edition of the awards return, with current restrictions requiring the event to be held outside for the first time. Despite this, it remains one of the only awards ceremonies that can take place with an audience during Australian Music Month.

As a result, all eyes will be on the City of Churches, not only due to its status as a UNESCO City of Music, but for the fact that some of the best and brightest Aussie talent will be honoured for their efforts in what has undoubtedly been a rough year.

With things set to kick off in just a matter of days, we were able to chat with J-MILLA (who is nominated for theBest Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Artist award this year) about the importance of the awards, advice for upcoming artists, and more!

Check out ’60K+’ by J-MILLA:

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Jacob Nichaloff, I was born and raised in Darwin but currently living in Adelaide. I am a tribe member of the Mak Mak Marranungu people from Litchfield, Northern Territory.

What does the opportunity of winning a SAM Award mean to you?

For me, possibly winning a SAM would make me feel proud of myself. I have never won a music award in my life and if I possibly could win one, I would feel honoured, appreciative and motivated to work hard for another one.

Why is it important to forge ahead with the SAM awards despite what COVID-19 has thrown at the music industry this year?

I think it is extremely important to celebrate the SA music industry, as it’s a time all musicians can come together, interact and celebrate our hard work. We have so much talent in SA that it is important for these awards to be given out as artists need to feel that love.

What’s your advice to upcoming musicians?

My best advice for upcoming SA musicians is to have persistence and maintain the consistency of quality content. To always do what makes you happy as an artist and even when you can’t find that spark of motivation, never give up as that rough period of time is building up much more of a better outcome for you.

What are you favourite SA acts?

I have a variety of artists that I think are amazing and are my top favourites. DyspOra, Elsy Wameyo (Playback 808 Kingdom) and EAST AV3.

Anything upcoming that you’re stoked about?

My track for NAIDOC Week 2020 ’60K+’, featuring Goji (Jimblah), came out last Friday and I was super hyped to release it in celebration of the theme Always Was, Always Will Be.
