Is Sydney’s The Basement closing its doors?

One of Sydney’s long running clubs, The Basement in Circular Quay, is rumoured to be closing its doors – and probably within a week.

The story/rumour was broken by Danny G Felix, who hosts the club’s Monday Jam session.

He told patrons in a Facebook post that tonight’s session would be the last at the Basement, and asked for suggestions for the Monday Jam’s next home

He posted: “So it’s true. The Basement is closing down in less than week.

“AMP the owners of the building are turning it into office spaces after 45 years of live music almost every night”

The Basement started out in the ‘70s, and soon developed into Sydney’s top jazz club.

The operators of The Basement have not commented on Felix’s post or of its future.

We’ll update the story as it unfolds

The story was broken last night on the Noise 11site.

Last night, The Basement hosted a sell-out gig Ireland’s Ryan McMullan while Australian jazz and blues singer Frances Madden played to a capacity crowd on Saturday night.

Coincidentally, Madden was spotted playing in a hotel lobby by Basement co-owner Dominique Robinson who booked her immediately and helped her develop a following.
