Iggy Azalea, 5SOS, AC/DC up for Billboard Music Awards
Australia's pop and rock exports are continuing tomake waves overseas with Iggy Azalea, 5 Seconds of Summer, AC/DC and Hillsong UNITED among the latest acts to receive recognition.
Azalea became the third-most nominated artist this morning, receiving 12 nods. The Mullumbimby-born rapper follows Taylor Swift, with 14, and Sam Smith, with 13 nominations.
The Billboard Music Awards is largely recognised as the industry’s popularity contest; nominees are chosen based on album and track sales (both physical and digital), streams, airplay and social media interactions. This year's results arebased on the reporting period of March 10, 2014, through March 8, 2015 and tracked by Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound.
The Awards feature 40 chart-specific categories and a fan-voted category; Azalea, Taylor Swift ad Meghan Trainor are up for the fan-voted award.
AC/DC is up for Best Rock Album for 17th effort Rock or Bust alongside The Black Keys forTurn Blue, Coldplay forGhost Stories, Hozier for his self-titled and surprisingly Lorde forPure Heroine.
Sydney’s boy band phenomenon 5 Seconds of Summer are up for two awards, Top New Artist and Top Duo/Group.
The group spawned from Sydney’s Hillsong Church, Hillsong UNITED – composed of volunteers and employees of the church– is up for Top Christian Artist.
Adelaide Grammy Award nominee Sia hasn’t been nominated, despite her March 2014 released single Chandelier hitting #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and placing at #25 on the year-end chart.
The Billboard Music Awards will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 17.
