Google Play Music integrates Songza

US and Canadian subscribers to Google Play All Access are now able to access Songza, the activity based recommendations service acquired by Google in July.

According to Google Play Music product managers Brandon Bilinski and Elias Roman, the new service is now available for Android and iOS apps as well as online. Essentially a revamped ‘Listen Now’ page, Songza can be accessed in all 45 countries that Google Play is available in.

Songza’s take on internet radio comes courtesy of its Music Concierge feature. Launched in March of 2012, it enables users to select music based on a time of day and activity. Categories for busy days could include dance music driven lists like ‘Working to a Beat’, while moments of calm could call for playlists that feature everything from nature sounds to breezy pop tunes.

The inclusion of the activity-based playlists is indicative of Google’s attempt to catch up with the many competing internet radio services that already flaunt variations on the Music Concierge technology. Spotify, Beats and Rdio have all got similar features available to users, however, due to Google Play Music’s on demand, all-you-can-eat service, the Concierge is able to offer more than a standalone, non-interactive platform like Songza. Users are able to download the music stations to listen when offline, see upcoming tracks and edit playlists. They will also be allowed to start a new station based on any song in selection provided.
