Genesis Owusu Leads 2022 AIR Awards Nominations

Genesis Owusu Leads 2022 AIR Awards Nominations

Genesis Owusu will get several chances to extend his freakish streak of industry awards, when AIR’s Independent Music Awards is presented Aug. 4 in Adelaide.

The Canberra-raised funkmaster scoops a hattrick of nominations at the 2022 AIR Awards, to be held at the Freemasons Hall.

Owusu’s full-length debut Smiling With No Teeth is up for independent album of the year, a category that also features recordings from The Jungle Giants, Courtney Barnett, Liz Stringer and Amyl and The Sniffers, all of whom garner multiple nominations on the night.

The independent song of the year category will be contested by King Stingray (“Get Me Out”), Vance Joy (“Missing Piece”), Casey Barnes (“God Took His Time On You”), Owusu (“Smiling With No Teeth”) and Jaguar Jonze (“Who Died And Made You King”).

Smiling With No Teeth has collected silverware left and right, including ARIA and APRA Awards, triple j’s J Award for Australian album of the year, the Australian Music Prize and the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition.

The ceremony will, once again, be bookended by AIR’s annual Indie-con Australia conference, which runs Aug. 3-5.

The full program and tickets will be released next month, organisers say.

“Music – be it recorded or live – plays such a huge part of our lives, and has a significant impact on our culture, wellbeing and on our economy,” comments South Australian Minister for Arts, Andrea Michaels MP in a statement unveiling the 2022 nominations.

“I would like to congratulate the nominees this year and look forward to welcoming delegates from around the country back to Adelaide.”

The South Australian government, through the Music Development Office and Events South Australia is a major partner for both the Indie-Con Australia conference and 2022 AIR Awards.

“We look forward to welcoming our members and speakers to Adelaide for the 2022 Indie-Con Australia Conference and AIR Awards and thank the South Australian Government for their continued support,” adds AIR CEO Maria Amato.
