Gang Of Youths on target to score a #1 album

Gang Of Youths’ new album Go Farther in Lightness is a triumphant record, sounding like a brilliant blend of the following artists, without leaning too heavily on any of them: The Gaslight Anthem (David Le’aupepe’s voice is a dead ringer to Brian Fallon’s in places), Bruce Springsteen around the Born To Run era, ’70s bar-room Billy Joel, whiskey-soaked Tom Waits when he isn’t putting on the Ralph The Dog voice, Wide Open Road by The Triffids, and old testament Nick Cave.

Point is, it’s a great record and looks likely to debut at #1 on this week’s ARIA chart – it will certainly land in the top three.

Let’s look at the main challengers. Hopefully Sheeran’s reign at #1 is over for some time, but we can never really write him off. Last week’s #1 — Paul Kelly’s Life is Fine — is likely to slide down the charts after a strong opening week.

Ke$ha’s Rainbow will still float around the top reaches after debuting at #3 last week, and the only other debut likely to enter the top 5 is Thy Art Is Murder’s Dear Desolation.

Gang Of Youths’ 2015 debut The Positions peaked at #5, scoring five ARIA nominations.
