Foxtel invests in Asian pop with new show

On June 6, [V] Hits will premiere its new weekly show, The A-Pop Show.

Airing every Tuesday at 8pm AEST, [V] Hits will be dedicating an hour to the wildly popular Asian pop genres covering K-pop, J-pop, C-pop and T-pop hits, with encores airing every Thursday at 8pm.

“We all know Psy,” reads the announcement, “but what other poptastic gold does Asia have on offer? Discover a whole new world of pop, with A-pop favs from Korea’s BTS (pictured) to Japan’s Utada.”

It’s an intelligent move by the 22-year-old subscription broadcaster. allkpop, a site for K-pop gossip and news, has over 10 million monthly readers worldwide. Meanwhile, girl groups like the now defunct Kara, 2NE1, and Rainbow sold millions of albums and filled stadiums worldwide.

In Australia BIG BANG, who are often referred to as the “Kings of K-pop” filled what was then Allphones Arena (now Qudos Bank) in Sydney, and Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne in 2015.

Foxtel has reached out to the music industry for Asian pop artist and video submissions.

Foxtel’s 24-hour music channel [V] Hits emerged in last February last year when it closed its Channel V stable to cut production costs. Channel V and V Hits were merged resulting in a number of staff redundancies.
