Female-focused Aussie music magazine ‘Women In Pop’ to launch next month

Female-focused Aussie music magazine ‘Women In Pop’ to launch next month

A new music magazine focusing exclusively on female artists, Women In Pop, will launch next month.

Editor and proprietor Paul Mitchell said he hopes the magazine will go some way in helping the “injustice towards female musicians”.

“If you pick up any music magazine across the world you’ll find very little of it is devoted to women, and new artists find it difficult to gain exposure, especially women in the mainstream music media, and I wanted to try and reverse that,” Mitchell told Mumbrella.

“Not only do the media misrepresent them, they are under portrayed. As a society as a whole we don’t give female musicians as a whole the respect or gratitude they deserve.

“There are no other magazines that focus purely on women musicians so in that respect we are unique. However, there are a lot good music magazines out there, particularly in Australia there are a lot of good online music blogs and websites, which we are obviously competing for space.”

Sales Manager Jane McGregor hopes the unusual step of launching a print magazine will help set the publication apart.

“Despite what people say, yes magazine circulations are going down, but I still believe strongly there is a market for niche publications”, McGregor told Mumbrella. “We are seeing a few drop off in the big names but walk into any newsagent and the shelves are still full of titles which are fairly niche and are doing very well. You could argue its a risk but we think its the right move for our brand.”

Women In Pop will launch on May 1 as a quarterly magazine, retailing for $10.
