Electronic Music Conference announces first keynote speaker
PRESS RELEASE:
EMC today announces Night Mayor of Amsterdam, Mirik Milan as its first keynote speaker for 2016. In line for its fifth and biggest edition yet, EMC 2016 returns to Sydney’s The ivy Complex from November 28 – December 2 for a week of keynotes, interactive sessions, Q&As, panels, workshops, master classes, showcases, parties and more, celebrating electronic music culture in the Asia Pacific region.
Mirik Milan has been the Night Mayor of Amsterdam since 2012. The Night Mayor Foundation is an independent, not for profit foundation dedicated to ensuring a dynamic nightlife in Amsterdam, and helping to build bridges between the business owners specific to nightlife in the city, and the city council, the mayor, residents and the public to create a pleasant, safe environment without damaging the night-life’s attractive and vibrant economy.
Coming as a timely counterpoint to Sydney’s much documented lockout laws, Milan will be the opening keynote at EMC 2016, highlighting the successes of Amsterdam’s nightlife policies and how other countries can implement similar solutions to cultivate a sophisticated and flourishing nightlife. Milanwill also touch on the success of other European cities such as Paris, Zurich and Tolouse that have also employed the use of a Night Mayor model, and how this role can be a catalyst for dialogue between all stakeholders of the nighttime economy.
EMC Programmer Erin Flanagan said, “We believe Milan’s knowledge and experience will be invaluable in our own city’s pursuit of a vibrant and safe nightlife. Amsterdam has shown us and the rest of the world that it is possible to achieve this.”
Last year’s expansive week-long program featured international keynote speakers such as Carl Cox and Gilles Peterson, and key local and international industry members – alongside a stacked EMCPlay lineup of 14 curated showcases across four official venues. Stay tuned for the full EMC 2016 agenda to land soon.
