Dua Lipa and Stormzy each nab two BRIT Awards
The BRIT Awards have wrapped up for another year. An eventful night came to an end with Stormzy and Dua Lipa coming out on top care of two wins each.
Stormzy, who took out British Male Solo Artist and Album of the Year for Gang Signs & Prayer, also performed on the night beneath a cascading waterfall, as well as calling out Theresa May over her handling of the Grenfell Tower fire in a controversial acceptance speech.
For her part, Dua Lipa nabbed gongs for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough, after also copping nominations for British Album of the Year, Single of the Year and British Video of the Year.
Ed Sheeranentered the night in the running for four BRITs, but only managed to take home the Global Success Award.
The hotly contested British Single of the Year was won by Rag’n’Bone Man for ‘Human’, beating out a slew of other competitors including Sheeran, Little Mix, Clean Bandit, Calvin Harris and more.
One category, British Artist Video of the Year, pitted three One Directioners against each other, with Harry Styles coming up trumps for ‘Sign Of The Times’ ahead of ZAYN’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’ alongsideTaylor Swift and Liam Payne’s ‘Strip That Down’ ft. Quavo.
In terms of the international categories, Lorde beat out Swift and P!NKfor International Female Solo Artist while Kendrick Lamar won International Male Solo Artist.
Kendrick gave an eccentric, and at times confusing performance which included extended muted periods and an intro where he laid down on top of a box with a car in it. The car was eventually taken to with a crowbar.
Stormzy’s wasn’t the only topical speech given, with Ellie Goulding addressing Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow’s “step up” comments made recently at the Grammys.
“It’s so amazing to see so many people tonight wearing the rose,” said Goulding. “We’re very proud to be women, and actually I think we can all agree that we’ve been stepping up for years.”
