Double J Pick of the Week

Bob Mould
I Don’t Know You Anymore

He may have started playing music 35 years ago, but to this day Bob Mould is making records that most young, bright-eyed rock bands could only dream about.

I Don’t Know You Anymore is the first single from Mould’s latest record Beauty & Ruin, his tenth solo record after six with Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and two with Sugar in the 1990s. Its melodies are as catchy, the guitars roar beautifully and the whole thing is delivered with similar energy to the way he played all those years ago.

The song itself is exciting, energetic indie rock of the best kind. The kind Mould helped develop and that doesn’t seem to age badly. At least it hasn’t so far. The song is brilliant, so is the album from which it is lifted, and the fact that a revered figure like Mould can remain this vital so many years on, is inspiring.

Its accompanying film clip is great as well. Mould plays a clueless, aging rocker who takes advice from The Decemberists’ frontman Colin Meloy, who adopts the role of an irritating, moustache-waxing modern-day rockstar. Hilarious.
