Double J is the #1 digital radio station in Australia

Double J is the #1 digital radio station in Australia

Double J is the top digital radio station in Australia, according to industry ratings provider GfK.

The ratings for ABC’s digital-only response to the complaint “triple j ain’t what it used to be” have finally been released.

For the first time since the launch of DAB+ digital radio broadcasts in late 2009, audience numbers for all digital-only stations have been released, with Double J taking the top spot across all five metro markets.

Having launched almost three years ago (April 30, 2014) with Myf Warhurst at the wheel, the station is Australia’s most listened-to digital-only radio station with a total of 192K listeners across all markets from 5.30am – midnight (GfK).

The GfK data also shows ABC digital-only stations Double J, ABC Jazz and triple j Unearthed account for three of the top five most listened-to stations across the five cities.

The news should come as no surprise. The ABC conducted three nationally representative surveys from August 2016 – January 2017. These surveys of 4,200 Australians identified an overall weekly listening reach of approximately 745,000 people for Double J.

Myf Warhurst, now Double J’s Lunch Presenter, told The Industry Observer:

“Having been at Double J since we launched in 2014, it’s just so lovely to see everyone’s hard has work paid off – building the station all the way up to the #1 digital-only radio station in the country! Double J consists of dedicated music lovers, and it’s wonderful that a large likeminded audience have come along for the ride. We can’t thank them enough – without their thirst for quality music content, we wouldn’t exist. And you know what? We’ve had a blast doing it.”

Double J is expected to increase its capacity around live music recording this year and has revised its music content for 2017. It now includes a daily The Beat Eclectic program, world music show Fat Planet at Double J, and is adding Live At The Wireless on Double J with new and classic recordings.

Meagan Loader, Double J’s Content Director said in a statement:

“These ratings results across all listening platforms highlight Double J’s deep understanding of its audiences’ needs, as their lives change and they move out of their 20s. Double J’s reach extends even further via its warm and intimate engagement on social media. Last week we celebrated reaching 100,000 followers on Facebook alone, where our posts generate lively debate amongst like-minded music lovers.”

ABC DAB+ digital radio has launches planned for Canberra and Darwin later in 2017, and expansion to Hobart next year.
