Courtney Barnett leads ARIA nominations
Courtney Barnett, Vance Joy, Hermitude and Tame Impala lead the 2015 ARIA Award nominations with both Barnett and Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker picking up two early Artisan awards.
"I didn't think I would win an award for a drawing I did with a felt tip pen on a piece of printer paper," said Barnett when shetook out the ARIA Award for Best Cover Art this morning.
She leads the nominations with eight nods in the following categories: Album Of The Year, Best Female Artist, Best Independent Release, Best Rock Album, Breakthrough Artist and the publicly voted categories for Best Australian Live Act and Best Video for the song, Pedestrian At Best which was directed by Charlie Ford.
Parker took out two ARIA Awards at the Telstra Customer Insight Centre (CIC) in Sydney for Producer Of The Year and Engineer Of The Year for Tame Impala’s #1 ARIA Album, Currents. Tame Impala, who in 2013 took out ARIAs for Best Rock Album and Album Of The Year, are nominated in sic categories: Album Of The Year, Best Group, Best Rock Album and Best Pop Release for their single Let It Happen.
Tied with seven nominations each are Blue Mountains electronic duo Hermitude and Mushroom signing and global chart climber Vance Joy. Both are nominated in the Album of the Year and Best Independent Release categories for their #1 albums Dark Night Sweet Light (by Hermitude) and Dream Your Life Away (by Vance Joy).
Sydney band Gang of Youths and Brisbane’s Jarryd James whose debut LP entered the chart at #2 last month, are both up for five ARIA Awards.
Daniel Johns, whose debut solo album Talk hit #2 this year, is up for two awards, Best Male Artist, Best Video. He was previously nominated for Best Cover Art and Producer Of The Year but lost out to Courtney Barnett and Kevin Parker, respectively.
Brisbane-born newcomer Conrad Sewell, Flight Facilities, country music star Lee Kernaghan, Paul Kelly, The Preatures, Sia and The Waifs have all been nominated three times.
Independent label UNFD sees three of its acts nominated in theBest Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album category, with albums by Northlane, Thy Art Is Murder and In Hearts Wake up against Born Lion and King Parrot for the ARIA. Its artist Dead Letter Circus was also nominated forBest Rock Album withAesthesis hitting #2 on the ARIA chart in August.
In an Australian Awards show first, Twitter Australia is giving fans the opportunity to vote exclusively in the Best Australian Live Act category.
Artists in attendance today included Gurrumul, Courtney Barnett, Jessica Mauboy, Troy Cassar-Daley and The Preatures.
Winners are to be announced at The Star, Sydney on Thursday, November 26, 2015.
