Chrissy Amphlett to be inducted into hall of fame

The Divinyls late singer Chrissy Amphlett will be the second to be inducted this year into The Age/Music Victoria hall of fame.

The ceremony will be part of the awards on November 21 at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

Ella Hooper of Killing Heidi will be performing a Divinyls singer in honour.

The first, Ian “Molly” Meldrum was inducted last month after the unveiling of his life-size bronze statue in a park in Richmond, near his home.

They join an honour roll which includes John Farnham, AC/DC, TISM, Wedding Parties Anything, Paul Kelly, The Palais Theatre, Triple R, Olivia Newton-John, Daddy Cool, The Seekers, Archie Roach, Renee Geyer, Michael Gudinski, journalist and founder of Juke magazine Ed Nimmervoll, producers Bill Armstrong and Tony Cohen, community radio broadcaster Stephen Walker among others.

Amphlett was born in the Melbourne satellite town of Geelong and attended Belmont High School.

She left home in her teens, busking in Melbourne’s central business district in between her day job working in a menswear store.

She later moved to Sydney where she formed The Divinyls, going on to have global hits such as “The Boys In Town”, “I Touch Myself” and “Science Fiction”.

She was inducted in 2006 into the ARIA Hall of Fame with the rest of the band.

Soon after her death in New York from breast cancer in 2013 at the age of 53, a campaign began by fans and local music industry figures to honour her with her own street.

A petition was signed by 7000.

In February 2015, the City of Melbourne opened Amphlett Lane, off Little Bourke Street between Spring and Exhibition streets.
