Central London’s oldest record store for sale on eBay
In what may be one of the surest signs of the enduring struggle that surrounds physical record sales, a London man has put his entire record store and its contents up for sale on eBay.
For anyone out there hankering for an “opportunity to live the High Fidelity life”, a cool £300,000 will make you the proud owner of On The Beat Records, which the seller describes as, “the oldest record shop in the centre of Swinging London”.
The seller isn’t banking on the store’s potential to rake in profit as a drawcard, instead highlighting the many lifestyle perks that come along with owning your own record store in Central London.
“If you’re at the stage in your life when you don’t have to worry about making money but can live the bohemian life, meet interesting people every day and the occasional pop or rock star, here’s your chance.”
On The Beat Records was opened by owner Tim Derbyshire on Hanway Street in Central London, in 1979: the immediate wake of the punk/new-wave revolution. Now almost 35 years later, the store operates on the same site, stocking new and rare vinyl, as well as a mountain of CDs, and memorabilia including concert posters, original photos, magazines, tickets and t-shirts.
“If you’re mad about music, love vinyl and want to keep the dream alive, here’s your chance to take on an Aladdin’s Cave of musical gems,” reads the listing.
The listing also says that without a buyer, the shop will shut down.
“Without someone buying it, it will disappear. I’ve given it my heart and soul for all these years but it’s time for me to step down and let another passionate music lover take over.”
There’s just 19 days left for you to join the rush (well, the two) of other bidders and throw your hat in the ring. Better yet, why not split costs with a couple of mates and get in on the fun together, High Fidelity style.
