Call It A Hunch: CLYPSO – YOLO

In this regular feature, TMNzooms in on a track that’s picking up serious buzz. This week, we caught up with Sydney-based producer CLYPSO, who describes her sound as “a collage of hyperactive beats, grimy basslines and Afropunk-infused electronica” and “troppo chilli flakes.”

After copping a hearty playlisting from Spotify – as in, appearances inThis Week Sounds Like, New Music Friday, and Brand New – lead singleYOLO crept up to #11 in the Australia Viral 50, and has been played on FBiSydney, Triple R Melbourne and triple j Unearthed.

Recorded and produced in CLYPSO’s bedroom, YOLO is an irresistible journey through a mysterious jungle party: sly, humid, nimble, with a futuristic but still organic approach that makes 2010’s favourite catchcry feel fresh and immediate.

Who are you?

Influenced by Afrobeat and Atari-esque synths, CLYPSO is the Afropunkster alter ego of Sydney organist and sound designer Claud.

Starting the music writing obsession early in life, sequencing on her electronic organ as a kid, selling synth riffs to MCs online, programming demos for bands…CLYPSO was the result of craving a DIY process and freedom to collage, genreblend and blur as well as spit out tongue-in-cheek urban laments.

Are you signed or unsigned?

Unsigned.

Tell us about YOLO!

YOLO’s chorus was the result of overhearing a group of girls on a hen’s night obviously having a great time and showing it. One of them shouted “Hashtag YOLO!” in response to her friend and few of the others then started chanting it. “Yolo!” echoing through the street had a great ring to it so I ran with that.

I like that it isa freewheeling afrobeat frenzied celebration created through tribal beats, kettle drums, maracas, deep-seated subby synth riffs and vocal yelps which gradually build up and explode into speckly marimba accents.

I think people dig the infectious beat and catchy chorus.

Which Australian act would you most love to open for or collaborate with?

Would love to open for and/or collaborate with PNAU or Rufus.

What’s next?

A video for YOLO coming up early June. A few gigs happening around Sydney. Some potential collaboration, topline and features in the pipeline. New music coming soon.
