Brisbane Powerhouse appoints Kate Gould as CEO and artistic director

Brisbane Powerhouse has announced celebrated arts and cultural leader Kate Gould as the organisation’s next CEO and artistic director.

Gould, who is the former CEO and associate artistic director of the Adelaide Festival, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having previously worked alongside the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Aboriginal Art and Cultures Centre (SA), Monash University and Australian Dance Theatre.

The Queensland native is also recognised as one of the co-founders of Mona’s iconic Dark Mofo festival, and also championed the launch of the Adelaide Crows AFL Women’s team while acting as a director of the club.

She replaces Kris Stewart as artistic director who recently accepted the role of CEO of QMusic following the resignation of Angela Samut.

Brisbane Powerhouse board chair Valamy Hill described Gould’s position as “the organisation’s biggest role yet”, noting the widespread international interest in the newly combined CEO/artistic director job.

“This is undoubtedly the organisation’s biggest role yet and one that commands the ultimate balancing act of achieving both great artistic outcomes and commercial success,” Hill said.

“Kate is an exceptional talent whose skills, experience and networks will help realise the significant potential of Brisbane Powerhouse.

“She’s a visionary in the truest sense of the word – adept at identifying opportunities and making them happen – and primed to lead the exciting next phase of artistic, commercial and precinct development at Brisbane Powerhouse.”

Gould, meanwhile, expressed her excitement at the prospect of returning to Brisbane, and offered an insight into her creative direction for the Brisbane Powerhouse ahead of commencing the role on Monday, July 5.

“After 17 years away I’m excited to become reacquainted with the open warmth of Brisbane and I look forward to reconnecting with artists and audiences across the city,” she said.

“My vision for Brisbane Powerhouse is to cement its position as a force for contemporary art in Australia and for it to become a ‘must see’ destination for locals and visitors alike.

“For 21 years Brisbane Powerhouse has produced and presented great art and I feel privileged and excited to continue that legacy.”
