The 2017 Screen Music Awards nominees are out – with twice as many women as last year’s list

The official nominees list is finally out for the APRA Screen Music Awards 2017.

The list, unveiled by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers earlier today, includesAustralian composers who’ve worked on productions ranging from international blockbusters to Aussie indies, as well as performing artists like Briggs, Sarah Blasko and Missy Higgins.

Women are represented in eight of the twelve categories, including Most Performed Composer Overseas and Feature Film Score Of The Year.

The number of women nominated has nearly doubled compared to 2016– 17.4% of nominees this year are women, comparied to 9.8% last year and 12.5% in 2015.

While the submissions for this year’s awards were made before APRA’s latest push to increase the number of womenin their membership ranks – and raise the proportion of female-identifying registered screen composers from a measly 13% – APRA AMOCS Writer Services director Jana Gibson says thenumber of women represented is still something to be proud of.

“Since we announced the research findings in August, APRA AMCOS has taken steps to further support and encourage women who write and compose music,” Gibson told TMN.

“We made a firm commitment to greater female participation in our programs and there are more initiatives in the pipeline. The women nominated in this year’s Screen Music Awards have created a high calibre of work across a range of categories, which indicates the exciting potential for this sector of the music industry.”
