Aussie bands are reigning supreme on the ARIA charts right now

Fresh from Paul Kelly dethroning Ed Sheeran as the current ARIA chart king with his first-ever number one album last week, Aussies have invaded the top of the charts, with four records in the top five this week.

The ARIA charts this week sees a huge amount of Aussie talent in the top five, with Sydney heroes Gang Of Youths taking out the number one spot with their second record Go Farther In Lightness. Of course, Paul Kelly has managed to hang around, dropping from last week’s chart-topping position, to a very respectable number two this week, thanks to his 23rd studio record Life Is Fine.

Of course Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide), which has topped the charts for so long this year that it’s almost easier to list when it wasn’t on top, is still in the mix, occupying the number three position this week. In fact, Sheeran’s record has been at the top for so long, that it has only hit lower than number two once before, back at the start of this month. Maybe Sheeran’s stranglehold on the Aussie charts is slowly starting to soften?

But the Aussie talent is still very strong, with King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard’s collaboration with Mild High Club, Sketches Of Brunswick East, reaching number four, and Thy Art Is Murder’s Dear Desolation hitting number five.

This representation of Aussie music in the top five is greatly overdue, with recent months in the charts seeing nowhere near this amount of Aussie acts. Of course, the single charts are another story. We haven’t seen too many Aussie artists in those charts for some time, but if the album charts are anything to go by, we may just end up seeing a huge change in representation sooner rather than later.
