ARIA unveils new chart award

Former Editor

ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) has unveiled a program to recognise local and international chart toppers with an ARIA #1 Chart Award which will be presented to artists as soon as they hit peak position.

The local and international success of Australian artists is more prevalent than ever; since January last year domectis acts have spent 34 weeks at the #1 position on ARIA’s Singles and Album charts, with 82 tracks reaching Gold, Platinum or multi-Platinum certification and 66 albums gaining accreditation.

ARIA CEO Dan Rosen says, “We’re thrilled to congratulate this amazing array of artists on their chart topping success and I’m delighted that we can celebrate their feats with an Award literally as they happen. We look forward to handing out many more awards to artists in the future.”

ARIA Chairman Denis Handlin AM adds, “A key feature of ARIA’s activities has always been to champion the development and success of recording artists. The ARIA #1 Chart Awards not only reflect the sales and chart successes achieved but also the great passion of fans right across the country for music.”

Among the artists to be retrospectively awarded are four-time ARIA Award winner Flume with his self-titled, INXS’ telemovie-propelled return to the chart with The Very Best and Sony’s talent show alumni Dami Im, Taylor Henderson and Justice Crew.

The Very Best spent seven weeks atop the chart from February 17 this year after peaking at #39 in November in 2011. Other impressive #1 stints include Sheppard’s single Geronimo, which spent three weeks on top in April and Justice Crew’s single Que Sera, which also spent three weeks at #1 this month.

International acts will be acknowledged moving forward.
