ARIA have announced the launch of a new weekly vinyl chart

ARIA have announced the launch of a new weekly vinyl chart

The Australian Recording Industry Association have today announced the launched of a brand new chart, with the sales of vinyl records set to receive its own weekly listing.

It’s hardly any secret that Australians love their music, and looking at sales figures, it’s hardly surprising to learn that they love their vinyl, too.

In fact, vinyl sales have been increasing for eight consecutive years, with their total sales increasing by a massive 15% alone in 2018. Needless to say, the format’s ongoing revival demonstrates just how much Aussies prefer an analogue format to the widespread availability of streaming.

Now, with Record Store Day set to kick off on Saturday, ARIA have now announced the launch of their new weekly Vinyl Albums Chart.

“The renewed love affair of Australian music fans with vinyl albums has been a phenomenon over the last few years,” explained Dan Rosen, Chief Executive of ARIA.

“There is a major sense of nostalgia to the experience of vinyl. The format is tangible and collectable, often with original and numbered artworks.”

“Artists are increasingly using physical formats such as vinyl as a way to give their fans a substantial way of showing their fandom, often working hand in hand with the digital and streaming version for the artist.”

While the first Official ARIA Vinyl Albums Chart will be unveiled this Saturday at 5pm, the folks over at ARIA have also delivered another first, revealing the 2018 ARIA End of Year Vinyl Albums Chart.

Considering the phenomenal success of the Bohemian Rhapsody biopic, it should come as no surprise to learn that Queen’s Greatest Hits tops the year-end chart, with the Guardians Of The Galaxy soundtrack and Nirvana’s Nevermind following closely behind.

Aussie talent isn’t too far behind though, with Gang Of Youths’ Go Farther In Lightness receiving the highest local placing at #6, while huge names like The Beatles, Amy Winehouse, and Arctic Monkeys also join them in the top ten.

Throughout the top 100, a stunning 31 local records make an appearance, including Skegss’ My Own Mess at #23, and three King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard reissues from #24 – #26, consecutively.
